In your own words

Does this sound like you?

Most people don’t call about “lubrication intervals.” They call because something reminded them. Here are a few common reasons drivers start thinking about an oil change.

“The wrench light came on.”

Lots of vehicles have a maintenance reminder that counts miles or tracks how the car has been driven. When it comes on, the car is telling you scheduled service is coming up or due. It isn’t a fault code, but you shouldn’t ignore it for months either.

“My sticker says I’m overdue.”

Windshield reminders usually show a mileage, a date, or both. Whichever comes first counts. A car that sits a lot can reach the date long before it reaches the mileage.

“I honestly don’t remember.”

That happens a lot, especially with a car you just bought. Check the glovebox for receipts. If you can’t find a record, it often makes sense to start fresh with an oil change.

Why it matters

What old oil stops doing

Engine oil puts a thin film between metal parts that move against each other thousands of times a minute. It also carries heat away from hot spots and holds soot and tiny particles until the filter catches them.

Over time, heat breaks oil down and contaminants build up. The engine can sound and drive the same, but the oil does a weaker job of protecting it. That’s why oil is changed on a schedule, not only after a problem shows up.

When it’s more than routine

A red oil pressure warning is not the same thing as a maintenance reminder. If that light comes on while you’re driving, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Oil spots under the car, a burning-oil smell or a new knocking sound also need more than an oil change. Describe them when you call so the shop can talk with you about general auto repair.

How often

Your owner’s manual sets the schedule

No single mileage number fits every car. Engine design, oil type and how you drive all affect the interval. The factory maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual is the best starting point. Here’s how to read it.

The job itself

What an oil change involves

In general, the old oil is drained from the engine, the oil filter is replaced and the engine is refilled with the right type and amount of new oil. Then the level is checked, and the maintenance reminder is reset if the car has one.

Conventional, blend or synthetic?

Conventional, synthetic-blend and full-synthetic oils differ in how they handle heat and how well they hold up over time. Some engines require synthetic oil. Others can use any oil that meets the manual’s specification. If you have a preference or aren’t sure what your car needs, ask about it on the phone.

Questions to ask before your visit

Ask about appointment timing, whether to wait or leave the car, and how you’ll hear if anything else comes up. Don’t assume drop-off or pickup arrangements are available. Ask first.

Other maintenance to ask about

Lots of drivers find it easier to handle several maintenance items at once. If your manual shows other items coming due around the same mileage, mention them when you call.
