General auto repair

Some problems don't fit a maintenance checklist. A new sound, a light on the dash or a car that just drives differently all fall under general auto repair at JJs Garage. The shop does not work on imports.

Call hours: Mon–Fri 8am–6pm · Sat–Sun 7am–noon

How it usually starts

“It’s just not right”

Most repair visits start with something the driver noticed, not a part name. Here are some common ways people describe a problem, and what's useful to notice about each one. None of these is a diagnosis. They just help you describe the problem clearly.

“It’s making a new noise”

Notice where the sound seems to come from: the front, the back or under the hood. Does it change with speed, engine speed or steering? A clunk over bumps and a whine when you speed up usually point to different systems.

“A light came on”

Write down the exact symbol or message and its color. Note whether it stays on, flashes or comes and goes. A flashing warning is generally more urgent than a steady one.

“It drives differently”

Hesitation, rough idling, pulling to one side or a vibration that wasn't there last week are all worth mentioning. Say whether it happens when the engine is cold, after a long drive or all the time.

“I smell something”

A sweet smell, burning oil, hot rubber or fuel can each point in a different direction. Mention whether you smell it inside the cabin or only outside the car.

“There’s a spot under it”

The color and location of a drip are useful clues. Put a piece of cardboard under the parked car overnight, then note where the spot lands and what color it is.

“It’s hard to start”

Slow cranking, clicking, or an engine that turns over but won't catch are different symptoms. Note the weather and how long the car had been sitting.

Questions worth asking

Every shop handles repair approvals a little differently, so it's best to ask while you're on the phone. These questions are a good place to start:

  • How will I hear what was found, and will I be asked before any work is done?
  • Will I get an estimate before you start, and what could change it?
  • About how long will the car need to stay?
  • Which repairs are urgent, and which can safely wait?

Clear answers to these up front help you plan, especially when a single symptom could have more than one cause.

A code is a clue, not an answer

Most modern cars and light trucks have a diagnostic port that stores trouble codes when the engine computer sees a problem. A code points to the system or sensor that reported the fault. It doesn't always tell you which part failed. For example, a sensor code can be caused by wiring, a vacuum leak or a different part that's sending the sensor a bad reading.

That's why replacing a part based on a code alone doesn't always fix the problem. If you've already had your codes read somewhere, bring the printout or code numbers with you. They're useful background, but they don't replace a proper look at the car.

Repair or upkeep?

If you already know what you need

Sometimes the issue is simply maintenance that's due. If so, the service pages explain what's involved:

If you're not sure which category your problem fits, don't worry about it. Describe what you've noticed and start there.

General safety guidance

When not to drive it in

Some symptoms mean you should stop driving and arrange other help instead of driving the car to a shop:

When in doubt, pull over somewhere safe and get advice before you keep driving.
